“The Derrick Ashong Experience” is a show on the Oprah Radio Network on Sirius/XM. Each week, Derrick has a “Best Blogs” segment where he invites the authors and creators of some of his favorite blogs. One week, I was honored to be one of his guests for the segment.

- The Atlanta Post website wrote a piece entitled, “Blogging Into A Career” and featured me along with four other bloggers. In it I talk about how I juggle my blog with my daytime job as a music/pop culture writer. The very first sentence (quoted above) was one of the more flattering things I’ve read about me.

From a piece I weighed in on for The Griot, the magazine for the National Urban League. I spoke on a panel about the “tragic decline of black marriages” sponsored by the organization’s New York City chapter, and they asked me to write my thoughts about it after.

“Mr. Cummings asserts that it is bothersome and undesirable to show proper respect and value for women by taking them out or doing anything that would necessitate spending time with the woman in question outside of the act of sex.”

- This was a quote from some blogger who was incensed over a piece I wrote for Essence.com entitled, “The Truth About Jump-Offs”.

The topic about casual sex relationships (the definition of jump-offs) was assigned to me by Essence and I was asked to give the male perspective on it. The piece caused such an uproar, Essence was forced to take it down. I refuse to re-post it on my own blog out of respect for the Essence staff, for whom I still write. But you can still read the anger I caused. I personally found it amusing.

This was the first piece of publicity I ever received as Jozen Cummings, author of UntilIGetMarried.com. Despite the controversy I caused Essence over another piece I wrote a few weeks later, the Essence staff has always been supportive of UIGM and we still work together from time to time.

In this piece, Essence Relationship Editor, Demetria L. Lucas and I get into a friendly back and forth about who should pay for the date between a man and a woman.
