Each week, Derrick has a “Best Blogs” segment where he invites the authors and creators of some of his favorite blogs.
The show is a current events show, so if you don’t want to hear Derrick talk about dated events in the news (although it is a really good show), you can skip to the 1:07:39 mark, where I called in and we talked about my blog and other relationship-related things.

“Independent Sources” is a news-magazine television show on...

“Independent Sources” is a news-magazine television show on CUNY TV here in New York City. A producer asked me to come to the studio and weigh in on an ABC News piece about race and relationships. They cut out a lot of what I said. I’m only in there for probably 30 seconds, so don’t blink!

In it I talk about how I juggle my blog with my daytime job as a music/pop culture writer. The very first sentence (quoted above) was one of the more flattering things I’ve read about me.

“Being unmarried, if anything, show a respect for the sanctity of marriage.”

From a piece I weighed in on for The Griot, the magazine for the National Urban League. I spoke on a panel about the “tragic decline of black marriages” sponsored by the organization’s New York City chapter, and they asked me to write my thoughts about it after.

The topic about casual sex relationships (the definition of jump-offs) was assigned to me by Essence and I was asked to give the male perspective on it. The piece caused such an uproar, Essence was forced to take it down. I refuse to re-post it on my own blog out of respect for the Essence staff, for whom I still write. But you can still read the anger I caused. I personally found it amusing.

Despite the controversy I caused Essence over another piece I wrote a few weeks later, the Essence staff has always been supportive of UIGM and we still work together from time to time.

In this piece, Essence Relationship Editor, Demetria L. Lucas and I get into a friendly back and forth about who should pay for the date between a man and a woman.
